What is Gateway?

Gateway, End Point Assessment overview

Gateway is a key stage in your journey toward completing your apprenticeship.

The Gateway is the point at which you, your employer and your assessor agree that you are ready to move on to the End-Point Assessment (EPA). It acts as a formal checkpoint to ensure you have met the following criteria.

  • Completed all mandatory training and the required off the job hours for the duration of your apprenticeship
  • Achieved any required qualifications
  • Met the knowledge, skills, and behaviours outlined in the apprenticeship standard, and assessed through the skills radar.
  • Been on programme for a minimum of 1 year and 1 day (for apprenticeships started before 01/08/2025)

At this stage:

  • We review progress within a Gateway review
  • You are informed of the next steps and documents will be shared with you to outline the process.
  • You, your employer and your assessor sign the review to show that you are now ready for gateway and have met the one programme requirements to progress through to end point assessment.

All parties will then have to sign a declaration to formally enter gateway

You proceed through to End-Point Assessment, which may include:

  • A practical assessment / Case Study
  • An interview
  • A professional discussion
  • A portfolio/project review

The EPA is conducted by an independent assessment organisation and determines whether you have successfully completed the apprenticeship and the final grade awarded.
