How to write a context statement
![]() |
A context statement is a short factual piece that details a real and recent piece of work you took part in or created. Think of it as giving your end-point assessor a “tour guide” as to what you did in a situation or what they are about to see if you have created something. Instead of just showing a piece of work or evidence, you explain the background – where it came from, why you did it, and what your role was. It doesn’t need to be long or complicated. The aim is to showcase to your end-point assessor the knowledge, skills, and behaviours (KSBs) you have covered within this piece of work. You will need evidence to support your statement, such as redacted documents or screen shots. |
Here is some general guidance for writing your context statement:
- Your assessor may have set up a context statement for you already, and this will be available within your Microsoft 365 SharePoint folder. If you require a new template, you can download this here, but please do upload and work on this within your folder.
- Look through your apprenticeship knowledge, skills and behaviour criteria and make a note of which criteria are going to be covered by this statement. This can be found in your referencing table, or on the Skills England website.
- Open with the date the event occurred, and what you did or were tasked to do.
- Explain the purpose of why this work needed to be done.
- Explain the role you played in completing the task or piece of work.
- What skills did you apply and be very clear on how you demonstrated these skills. Use lots of adjectives such as carefully, accurately, etc
- Write a short conclusion capturing the outcome and what you achieved.
- Explicitly explain what criteria this demonstrated and how the criteria were met.
Once you are happy with your context statement you will need to supply some supporting evidence. This is usually in the form of some redacted screenshots placed within the document at the relevant points. You can learn more about redaction here.
You can then click the assessment component in your Aptem learning plan and add the document to the component. This will then trigger an assessor to mark it.
